Funny Signs: Clothing Optional and Clothing Required in Vancouver

By DH Wall - Posted on September 17, 2007 at 9:57 pm

By looking at 2 very unique signs in Vancouver, the observer will see the variations in attitudes towards nudity in Vancouver in probably one of the most unique topics covered (or should I say "uncovered") here on Vancouver'd.

At Wreck Beach, clothing IS optional.

The Travel Channel ranked Wreck Beach the Number 3 in its Best Nude Beaches in the World. That's saying a lot. Imagine that! Vancouver, Canada has one of the world's best clothing optional beaches AND the Travel Channel endorses it.

Clothing optional sign

Pack lots of sunscreen and forget about a bathing suit. There's no need for soggy uncomfortable bathing suits at Wreck Beach when the weather is warm. If the Travel Channel says its ok, why not? You only live once. Find this sign in Vancouver and you're near the nude beach.

Want to know more about the beach before visiting? Spending less than $20 on the Wreck Beach Book seems like a good deal.

In contrast to Wreck Beach is the Granville Island False Creek Community Center. The attitude towards clothing at the community center is on the other side of the spectrum.

Granville Island's False Creek Community Center is "Clothing Required".

This sign says virtually everything is prohibited except walking slowly in an orderly manner. No running. No dogs. No nudies. In that order.

Can you spot the funny thing about this sign?

Strange though: Granville Island received top honors in 2004 as the Best North American Neighborhood. Those must be the rules required. Then again, Wreck Beach is not far away and who wouldn't want to live near there.

Can you imagine the conversation when this community center sign was ordered?

"Hello, hello. Yes, I'd like to order a sign that says No running or horseplay. No dogs. No nudies. No biking. Rollerblading. Skateboarding." - Community Center guy

"No nudies?" - Sign designer guy

"Yes, no nudies. We have a problem with them at the community center." - Community Center guy

"Ok, I'll put 'No Nudies' right in the center so it stands out.  That'll put an end to your nudie problem.  It'll cost you extra though." - Sign designer guy, laughing.

"Sounds great. Whatever the cost, it will be worth it." - Community Center guy

I'm guessing the False Creek Community Center people and the Wreck Beach people may not see eye to eye.
