What's the Vancouver Aquarium sea otter doing now?
Want to know what a sea otter does as it goes about its daily activities?
There's now a way to watch one of these fun, furry critters 24/7 online. The Vancouver Aquarium provides an "Otter Cam" on their website here.
The Otter Cam's staring otter is named Milo who swims back and forth and back and forth in his own personal pool. Sometimes he'll dive down and other he times floats leisurely on his back. Trainers also provide interactive toys to keep Milo entertained.
While watching the live otter cam, you'll also have a chance to learn more about sea otters. For instance, unlike dogs or cats who eat inexpensive pet food from the grocery store, sea otters have special dietary needs. Milo is fed a diet of clams, fish and crabs costing the Vancouver Aquarium $20,000 annually.
Out in the wild, most sea otters live in coastal waters in the Pacific Ocean in areas not easily accessible to people. Besides small populations in the coastal waters of British Columbia, Canada, not too far from Vancouver, larger sea otter populations are found on the coasts of Alaska, Russia, Washington and California.
Want to see sea otters in person?
If you'd like to see sea otters in person, the Vancouver Aquarium in Stanley Park has two, Milo and Tanu (another, Nyac, recently passed). It's a fun place with lots of displays of fish, sea mammals, amphibians and even a butterfly section. Special shows entertain visitors throughout the day, including one called "Sea Otter Talk". A current list of shows and directions to the Vancouver Aquarium can be found on their website here.
